Exhibitions and Collections

The Istanbul Naval Museum’s vast collection spans four levels, carefully curated to showcase the glory of Ottoman naval power and the evolution of Turkish maritime history.

  • 🚤 Imperial Caiques: The highlight of the museum is the gallery of 14 lavishly decorated royal boats used by Ottoman sultans. These gilded vessels, with intricate carvings, inlaid designs, and ornate canopies, reflect the grandeur of the empire. Among them is the Tarihi Kadırga, the only surviving original Ottoman galley in the world and the oldest intact wooden hull globally. The sheer scale and artistry of these caiques are breathtaking, giving visitors a rare glimpse into the ceremonial life of the Ottoman court.
  • ⚓ Ship Models & Technology: Dozens of meticulously crafted ship models display the evolution of Ottoman and Turkish naval engineering. From galleons and frigates to early submarines, these models help visitors understand the progression of maritime technology. Complementing them are antique navigational instruments such as compasses, sextants, and telescopes, as well as early diving equipment like brass helmets and weighted boots.
  • 💣 Weapons & Artifacts: Cannons, naval mines, and a variety of ship ornaments highlight the martial side of seafaring. A section of the massive chain once used to block the Golden Horn during the conquest of Constantinople in 1453 is on display, connecting visitors directly to pivotal moments in world history. Visitors can also see intricate figureheads carved with lions, birds, and mythological symbols, once mounted on Ottoman ships.
  • 🎖️ Uniforms & Personal Items: Collections of naval uniforms, medals, and insignia provide insight into the evolution of naval attire and rank across centuries. Personal effects from figures such as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk connect visitors to Turkey’s more recent history, emphasizing his vision for modernizing the navy.
  • 🖼️ Maritime Art: The museum also houses a gallery of maritime paintings and engravings. These artworks depict epic naval battles, seascapes, and portraits of Ottoman admirals such as Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha, blending artistry with history.

The combination of artifacts, art, and ship models creates a rich and multifaceted experience that appeals to both adults and children, offering educational and visual delights at every turn.

History and Significance

The Istanbul Naval Museum was first established in 1897 by the Ottoman Minister of the Navy, Hasan Hüsnü Pasha, under the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II. Initially located at the Imperial Naval Arsenal in the Golden Horn, it began as a modest collection aimed at preserving artifacts of naval history. Over the decades, the collection expanded significantly, and after several relocations, the museum finally settled in Beşiktaş. In 2013, a state-of-the-art modern building opened, providing the necessary space to display large artifacts like the imperial caiques while offering visitors a comfortable and accessible experience.

Today, the Istanbul Naval Museum is Turkey’s largest maritime museum and ranks among the most important naval museums in the world. With its 20,000 artifacts, it not only commemorates victories and naval technology but also highlights the cultural and symbolic significance of seafaring in shaping Istanbul’s identity as a city between continents.

Guided tours, sometimes available in English, provide deeper insights into the artifacts on display. The museum also collaborates with schools and universities, making it an important educational resource in Istanbul. Visitors are encouraged to check the official website for announcements on temporary exhibitions and seasonal events.
